Star Wreath
Christmas means…catalogs. So many catalogs! Which is actually great news because catalogs let you make this amazing Star Wreath to delight your friends and family — and you. Thank you Company Store™!
Simple folding and stapling makes the sturdy wreath form. It holds eight Catalog Stars that you just tape on. In minutes you have an absolutely beautiful, better-than-bought wreath all ready to deck your halls.
Made in minutes (and a great way to use those Catalog Stars you can’t stop making)
Super simple and great to do with kids
Incredibly beautiful
Perfect for a cozy and/or cottage Christmas vibe
Catalog paper is uniquely perfect for this because it’s easy to fold and easy to staple through multiple thicknesses. And its soft texture practically eliminates the risk of paper cuts while folding. Check out this Swedish Wreath post, and you might need to make a Star Garland as well. Happy recycled Christmas, everyone!
Steps At a Glance:
Ready? Here’s how:
1
You’ll need:
a catalog, the ordinary kind with very thin shiny pages held together with staples.
a penny
a stapler
tape
eight Catalog Stars
push pin, for hanging
2
Open the catalog and find the center where the staples come through. With the edge of the penny pry up the legs of the staples so you can pull them free from the outside. Pull out the staples and discard.
Take one full page, close it, and fold in half top to bottom.
Fold again the same way, then one more time to make a stick. Set the stapler on top to hold it while you fold a second stick.
3
Staple the two sticks together at right angles. Fold and staple on two more sticks to make a square, then make a second square.
One staple per corner should do it.
4
Lay one square on top of the other, forming a star. Staple the squares together at the eight places where they cross.
5
The Catalog Stars go on the eight outer triangles.
Make sticky-side-out circles of tape and place one at the base of each triangle
Then place a Catalog Star over the triangle and press to stick. Add more tape if you need it to secure the star.
Stick all the stars on, one on each triangle.
How much to think about this is up to you! I grab the closest star, decide which side I want facing out, and stick it on for a random assortment. You might be more of a planner. Either way your wreath will look awesome.
That’s it! Your Star Wreath is ready to hang from a push pin, and if you’re like me you can’t believe how great-looking it is.
If you ever take it down you can pop it right into the recycle bin. Try that with a store wreath!
Questions
Does it matter what size catalog I use?
Any size will work! The up-and-down height of the catalog = the length of the sticks, so shorter catalogs make smaller wreaths. All the catalogs I have tried have made wreaths that can hold eight stars. On a smaller wreath they might overlap a little, which looks nice too.
The two things that really matter are 1) using a catalog made with thin paper, because thick paper won’t staple through, and 2) the stapled binding. You need those extra-wide double pages to build your frame.
