Tall Box Nichos

A craft for every box, that’s our motto. And we may just have achieved that goal with this Tall Box Nicho. It takes your awkwardly tall cracker (and Mallomar!) boxes and turns them into elegant shapes you can fill and decorate or enjoy as-is. Made in minutes with scissors, a pen, and one single piece of regular tape, Tall Box Nichos are beautiful alone or in a group. And suddenly the cracker aisle is a much more interesting place…

  • Made from oddball cracker-type boxes

  • So easy to do

  • Looks elegant even left plain

Steps At a Glance:

Ready? Here’s how:

1

You’ll need:

  • any tall box - this works best if the box is at least twice as tall as it is wide

(If your box is open at both ends, tape one end closed)

  • scissors

  • pen

  • regular tape

2

Cut off one of the big top flaps, right along the fold.

If all four top flaps on your box are the same width, cut off any one of them.

3

You’re going to use the cut edge of the flap as a ruler.

Measure one flap length down from the top of the box at each corner. Mark all four corners.

Then cut from the top of the box down to the mark, at all four corners.

4

Cut off one of the short side flaps.

(If your flaps are all the same width, you’ve already done this.)

5

Now your box has one side that has a flap, and one side that doesn’t. Bring the two sides together, with the flap side underneath the no-flap side.

Tape them together at the top (at the fold) to form the pointy roof for your Nicho.

6

Set your scissors alongside the roof, without pressing against it, and trim away the extra box on one side. Then turn over and cut the extra box away on the other side.

Tip: Gently squeeze the front and back together to keep the roof from bending as you cut (see second photo).

7

With your pen, draw a line about 1/2” from the bottom. Draw another line from the point, down the middle, to the first line. Wobbly lines are OK! (You can’t see the middle line here because it’s hidden in the printing.)

Cut from the point down to the bottom line, and from there out to each side.

Tip: It’s easier to use the tips of your scissors at first when making those corner cuts.

Your new Nicho is ready to be opened up!

LED Candle Nicho

Tall Nichos make LED candles look good, and that’s saying something! Definitely not safe to use with real candles but fake candles look great in these nichos, even without decoration.
