Make a statement with Box Banners. Just cut triangles out of an empty box and decorate with letters. Kids can add the letters themselves, or color inside a grownup’s pencil lines. Punch and snip to make holes that are easy to slip over a string. That’s it! Perfect for parties and everyday decor. Easy and compact to store, the individual flags can be reused and rearranged for infinite future banners.
Quick to make from scratch, almost instant to make once you have some already-made letters on hand
Uses any kind of paperboard, even from crunched or torn boxes
Letters are optional! These look great with the factory printed colors facing out, or your own marker and crayon designs
Steps At a Glance:
Ready? Here’s how:
1
You’ll need:
empty box, such as a cereal or cracker box
scissors
hole punch
pencil
markers or crayons
string, yarn, or narrow ribbon
2
Open the bottom of the box and open the side seam. Lay the box flat with the plain side up.
Choose a large panel that is free of glue. Mark the middle point (it doesn’t have to be exact) on the fold lines at the long sides of the panel.
Then, on just one side, mark the midpoints between the middle and each end. You will have one dot on one fold line, and three dots on the opposite fold line.
Connect the dots as shown to form three triangles.
Cut them out with scissors.
Tip: Use one of your triangles as a traceable template. Perfect for recycling scraps or torn boxes into more flags.
3
Punch a hole in each top corner. Then snip upwards to the hole.
Decorate with markers or crayons.
Lay out the banners to see how much string you need. Leave a good tail at each end; you can always shorten later if needed.
Tie a loop at each end so you can hang your Box Banner from push pins.
4
Slide the string into the holes. You can run the string across the front or back of the banners, whichever looks best to you. That’s it! Hang from push pins and admire.

Try cutting rectangles, hearts, circles, or ovals. Punch and string as above.
