Trash & Crafting

When I first started playing around with macaroni & cheese boxes it was because they were so perfect. Maybe you’ve seen it too: the nice shape, the handy size, the perfect folds and corners, and the pretty color inside (and out). I thought there must be something fun to do with such a great box.

I discovered other materials we use and discard every day are just as great: catalogs, cereal boxes, plastic bags all have special qualities that make them ideal for crafting.

  • Paperboard boxes (from cereal, crackers, etc.) are strong yet easily cut, stand on their own, and can be decorated on their plain side.

  • Plastic bags from frozen food or bulk fruit are strong, waterproof, and colorful.

  • Catalog paper is just amazing - colorfully printed, pre-cut and pre-folded. The covers are heavy, while the pages are thin and easily folded (and they don’t give papercuts).

  • Tetrapak boxes are strong, waterproof, take paint without warping, and come in a range of sizes.

All this, and they get themselves delivered to your house. Which is lucky because you can’t buy any of these materials in any store, at any price.

Sometimes the best things really are free.
