Steps At a Glance:
Ready? Here’s how:
1
You’ll need:
a catalog
tape, double-sided tape, or a stapler
scissors
pencil
string
2
Cut about a 5-foot length of string. Fold the last three inches over and tie a loop for hanging at each end.
3
Take the staples out of the catalog. You can pry the ends up from the inside with a coin.
Take one whole, closed page with the fold on the left.
4
Fold the page in half from bottom to top, then in half again from bottom to top.
Trim about 1/4” from the top edge through all the layers.
5
The folded edges are at the bottom and the left of this rectangle. This is important for the hearts to come out right.
You’re going to cut an adorable heart freehand with just a few marks to guide you!
Mark the left edge in thirds.
Mark the top edge in half, then in half again.
6
Cut from the point to the 3/4 mark on the long edge, making your line slightly rounded.
Continuing in the same direction, cut an arc from there to the first 1/3 mark on the short edge.
Start a new cut from the second 1/3 mark rounding down about 1/4 way into the long folded edge to create the valley of the heart.
The uncut part at the top is where the heart will hang from.
7
Open one of your hearts. Lay your prepared string in the fold. Put double-sided tape, or regular tape folded around sticky-side-out (like here) in each hill of the heart, leaving space for the string.
Close up the heart and press to adhere the tape (or you can close and staple each hill instead of taping if you prefer).
Continue until your string is full of hearts, then hang from pushpins and enjoy.
